Lesson Plan

Advanced Placement (AP) Music Theory: Grades 10-12
Georgia Performance Standards: 
  • MHSAMTh.3: Reading and notating music.
  • MHSAMTh.5: Listening to, analyzing, and describing music.
  • MHSAMTh.9: Evaluate music and music performances.

Lesson Objectives: Students will be able to:
  1. Apply prior musical knowledge about reading, listening, analyzing, and describing music.
  2. Identify and classify all musical terms, including pitch, pitch names, octave, and octave registers.
  3. Recall and interpret all clefs (Treble, Alto, Tenor, and Bass)
  4. Identify pitches on a staff in treble or bass clef.

Assessment/Evaluation
Performance will be evaluated on the ability to make use of prior musical knowledge and comprehension of skills developed in this lesson through completion of the online quiz. 

Remediation Plan
Students who earn a grade below 80% will complete a follow-up video review and have the opportunity to retake the online quiz until mastery of 80%.

Students: Please follow the sequence below in order. Be sure to read ALL the resources and practice your skills, including spending some time on the musictheory.net website. Then, take the Online Quiz 1 below, choosing the best answer for each question.  

You will have 24 hours to complete these tasks. You must score at least 80% to pass the online quiz.  If you score below 80%, please review this lesson and watch the two supplemental videos before retaking the quiz. 

INSTRUCTIONAL WARM-UP VIDEO

Please watch this short instructional video which serves as the prelude for the following tasks.  It is highly suggested that you take notes while watching carefully.

Students must score an 80% or above to move forward. Be sure you have studied your notes from the previous tasks and have practiced your note identification exercises.

If you score below 80%, please watch the supplemental videos below and retake the quiz.

If you score an 80% or above, please move on to Task 6 (below)
